Submissions are the most common coursework type, in which the student will upload a file or files to be graded by you (or their peers if you so choose).
To create a Submission assignment:
From the Navigation Bar, under Coursework, click Add New, then select Submission.-
In Step 1, enter the Title for the coursework.
-
Assignment Grading Policy: Connect your coursework to your Grading Policy. In the Assignment Is Worth field, enter the weight of this assignment within its policy category (see the Grade Weights article for more info on how to weight your assignments).
-
Optionally include a Synopsis and/or Instructions for the coursework.
-
Use the checkbox at the bottom if you'd like to create a forum for this coursework. Kannu generates a forum name automatically, but you may change it to whatever you like.
-
In the Publish module on the right, set up whichever dates are necessary:
-
Due date (Required): When you would like students to submit the work by. Students may submit past the due date, but this info will be in red when you grade the submission.
-
Visible On: When students will be able to see that this coursework exists. Defaults to the time of publication.
-
Submission Window: These two dates control when students are actually able to submit through Kannu. Students will not be able to submit before the Cut-from date, nor after the Cut-off date. Leave blank to let students submit at any time (late work will still be marked in red).
-
-
In Step 2, define the grading criteria for this assignment. For information about grading criteria, see the Criteria Types help page. If you'd just like to give full credit for a valid submission, check the box to provide full credit for submitting this coursework.
-
In Step 3, define the submission requirements for this assignment (for example, if you want students to submit a photograph and an essay, you must define two requirement fields: 1. Photograph, 2. Essay).
-
Click the Add New Field button.
-
Enter a name for this submission field and one or more file types that you want to accept (e.g. .pdf, .jpg). You may use the "Field Type" drop-down menu to select a general type like "Image" or "Text," and Kannu will pick a set of common extensions to accept. You may also manually enter a file type (remember to begin with a period) and hit Enter after each file type you input. Kannu accepts virtually any file type, except those that could pose a security risk (EXE files, for example). Note that some files may be unable to display in your browser, but Kannu will still make them available for you to download. Each file a student submits must be 250MB or less, but you may accept any number of files.
-
Check the Required box if students must submit this file to complete the coursework.
-
Check the Available in Course Gallery box if you want this submission to be viewable for all students.
-
Check the Peer Assessment box if you want this submission to be peer assessed. NOTE: This will only be applicable if you use Peer Assessments for this coursework.
-
Use the Min Files/Max Files fields to control the number of files that are acceptable.
-
Click the Save Field button. Repeat these steps if you need to add more fields for separate submissions.
-
-
In Step 4, you can connect this coursework with any existing session or resource. NOTE: This is an optional step.
-
To add an assignment resource instead of using an existing one, click the Assignment Resources drop-down menu.
-
Click the Add Resource button and follow the prompts.
-
For more information on how to add resources, see the Session Resources help page.
OPTIONAL: To add an answer key, use the Answer Key drop-down menu. If you want to present a generic answer key, solution, or feedback when students view their grades you can do so by adding it in the answer key section.

In Step 5, you can review your created Submission coursework. To go back and change something, use the progress tracker at the top of the screen.
- Click the Preview button to see your assignment as a student, the Save as Draft button to save a draft of your assignment, or click the Publish button to finalize your coursework. You can continue to edit it at any time.
