Gradebook Overview
The Gradebook is where you'll be able to view your student's submissions, grade those submissions, mark attendance, and set your grading policies. The Gradebook has four sections within it: the Grade Sheet (where you can see grades and grade analytics), the Grader (where you can grade coursework), Grading Policies (which you can customize in a number of ways), and Attendance (where you can mark attendance and make notes). If your course doesn't use attendance, then you won't see this page in the Gradebook.
The grade sheet also has student-focused and coursework-focused views. Click any student's name to see their Student Page: a complete transcript for that particular student. Click any coursework name to see its Coursework Page: a complete list of student grades for that particular coursework.
Quick Actions
Right at the top of the Grade Sheet is the Quick Actions module. This module displays any coursework that requires your attention, i.e. a student has submitted and needs a grade. If all you need to do is grade work, this module has you covered. It will take you straight to the appropriate Grader page for each coursework.Sorting and Filtering
The Grade Sheet is the operations center. From here you can view all grades across the course, a simplified version that shows each overall grade in a coursework category, or high-level analytics like submission rate and median scores.Note the Export button on the upper right-hand side: any Grade Sheet view can be downloaded as a CSV file, and you can open it in spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel or Apple Numbers.
Next, to the Export button, you can click the settings cog for general options:
- View Coursework by Date: This will sort coursework by its due date, rather than by its category (the default). If your coursework is sorted by date already, this option will be View Coursework by Family.
- Apply Zero to All Past Due Coursework: This option will give a 0% grade to all coursework that is past due. Note that this can't be directly undone: if you select this option and change your mind, you'll have to clear grades for each student individually.
NOTE: These are "OR" filters, meaning that they will show all students meeting any of the filter criteria. For example, selecting both "Ungraded" and "Partially Graded" will show you a list of all students who have ungraded or partially graded submissions.
Most of these filters are self-explanatory: the one exception may be "Student Action Required." This means there is some sort of Participation requirement the student has yet to complete.
Grade Sheet Actions
Finally, there are a number of actions you can take directly on the gradesheet.- GTD: This stands for "Grade to Date." This is calculated by taking the weighted grades of all coursework that have been both submitted AND graded. You can use the arrow option "Include Zero for Past Due Coursework" to see what each student's grade would be if they received a zero for all late coursework. NOTE: This feature has no real effect on student grades. It is only for informational purposes. To apply zeroes, use the Apply Zero option as mentioned above.
- Apply Zero to Unsubmitted Work: Much like the global Apply Zero feature above, you can apply zeroes to all coursework that has yet to be submitted, regardless of due date. This is on a coursework-by-coursework basis and is an arrow option under each coursework name.
- Apply Zero to Grade: This is done on a grade-by-grade basis, and won't be an option for any coursework that's been graded. You can use this feature via the arrow option under any specific, unsubmitted coursework.
Student Page
At the very top of the Student Page, you can see the student's email address, a mailto link (this will open up an email for the student in your default mail client), a link to instant message this student within Kanu, and a link to their Portfolio. Use the arrows to navigate forward and backward (alphabetically) through your students. The student view has some similarities to the course-level view: particularly the Grades, Summary, and Analytics tabs. Use these to see all grades, grades by category, and student-specific analytics respectively. You can also export this view as a CSV file, or filter your view by submission status.
Each row has the basic coursework facts:
- Coursework: The coursework name.
- Score: The student's score, or submission status if they have no score.
- Percentile: The student's percentile rank. This will be calculated once all students have a grade on a particular coursework. A 100th percentile means the highest grade in the class.
- Last Submitted: The date they last submitted the coursework. This will be in red if the coursework was submitted late.
- Notes: If the student included any notes for the coursework, you'll see a checkmark here. Mouse over it to see their notes.
- Actions: Other than attendance, all coursework will have the first two actions enabled: Speed Grader, and Grader (more on these below). Submitted coursework will have two more: Download Submission and Allow Resubmission.
Coursework Page
At the top of the Coursework Page, you'll see three things:- The coursework title in a dropdown. From here you can navigate directly to any other coursework page.
- Instructions: These are the instructions you provided on the coursework itself.
- Coursework Resources: These are the resources you associated with this coursework.
Otherwise, the Coursework Page is the reverse of the Student Page: You'll be able to see a complete list of grades for all students on a specific coursework. Each row will be for a specific student, and the rest of the information is the same:
- Student: The student's name.
- Actions: All coursework will have the first two actions enabled: Speed Grader, and Grader (more on these below). Submitted coursework will have two more: Download Submission and Allow Resubmission.
Grader
You can view submissions and input grades on the Grader page. On the left is an overview of the student you're grading, like their name and Portfolio link, and an overview of the coursework, like its weight and the student's score. You can also view/download submissions here. If coursework is submitted late, the "Submitted" date will appear in red. From here you can also Reopen the Submission (in the case you want the student to resubmit or the student requests to resubmit), or Mark, as Submitted in the case the the student, submitted the assignment via an alternate method outside of Kannu.
You can use the arrows around the student image to change students, or click their name to search for others. You can also click the coursework name to change coursework. Note that you can still apply filters like "Submitted" at the top. Click the link beneath the title to see the coursework instructions.
On the right you'll see some modules. The ones you see depend on which criteria types you set up for the coursework. Note that with peer assessment, you'll see two separate modules: one to view the assessments received, and one to see how many assessments this student gave.
Towards the bottom of the Grader is the Overall Score bar. This shows you the percentage score this student currently has, as well as their point spread. Note that not all points have the same weight, so this may not be reflective of the percentage. Use the grade adjustment below to add a bonus or penalty to the final percentage.
At the bottom is the feedback section. Here you'll be able to directly address a student's work. For feedback you have our full text editor, so you can include images, audio/video, attachments, code snippets, etc.
